Firefighters responded to a basement fire on Harding Avenue on Monday at 4:44 p.m. Inspector Michael Pressler said the cause of the fire originated in the basement and was “accidental in nature, but undetermined at this time.” Police along with engine’s 1, 3, 5 and 6 responded as well as ambulances. No one was injuries. Firefighters broke windows to vent the smoke and entered from a basement door in the rear of the home. One fireman on-scene said “there was a tremendous amount of smoke. It took a minute before we could locate the source.” Pressler said it was “a small fire” extinguished quickly. Juana Argueta was home alone watching television on the first floor when she smelled smoke and saw it rising from the basement. She immediately called 911 and evacuated the residence. The homeowner and second-floor resident Jamele Hamad was not home at the time of the incident. — Adam Greenberg
